New Ownership for Grogan & Company

Georgina Winthrop was represented by Justin Batoff of Batoff Associates, P.A. in Baltimore, Maryland.

As of January 1, 2023, Boston auction house, Grogan & Company, has changed ownership from its founder, Michael Grogan, to Georgina Winthrop who started at Grogan & Company as an auction coordinator.

Winthrop, a Boston native, majored in History of Art and Architecture and minored in The Classics at Harvard and graduated in 2014. After college, she interned at a museum and at Sotheby’s in the Indian and Southeast Asian department.

The boutique auction house was founded in 1987. “We had our first auction in March 1988,” said founder Michael Grogan in an interview with Maine Antique Digest. Last year, Grogan & Company totaled about $8 million in sales, “but we only sold 870 lots,” said Grogan. Jewelry and paintings accounted for 80% of sales last year.

“I’m not going anywhere,” said Michael Grogan. “I’m still chasing deals. This is just a natural progression for me—I don’t want to die on the podium, but I’m not going to leave the business either. Georgina and her team are so talented.”

Despite the acquisition, Grogan will continue to own the real estate with the auction company acting as a tenant on the property, but the entire Grogan & Company staff will continue on with Winthrop. “It’s a new era, but it’s also a continuation,” Winthrop said to Maine Antique Digest.
